Bach: Partitas Nos. 2-4 by Johann Sebastian Bach

On 2010-01-19 A. F. S. Mui, HK wrote: I love Mr. Perahia´s early recordings - the Mendelssohn concerti are truly memorable and very moving.
After quite some time, I return to Mr. Perahia again - his Chopin (Etdues), Concerto, his Mozart concerti, now his Bach Partitas.
They are all very good - silvery touching, impeccable rhythms, undebatable accuracy and articulations.
However, Mr. Perhia´s touching seems to be rather flat in these works in that it lacked the type of ´three-dimensionalism´ required of good music making.
I disagree with reviewers who group Mr. Perahia´s pianism with Mr. Pollini. They are as different as difference could be: while Mr. Pollini´s touching is well-known to be full-blown and sturdy, Mr. Perahia boosts of a crystalline, gentlemanlike style.
Which type of touching serves Bach more? I would unhesitatingly reply - the sturdier type.
Fine that the Partitas are dances in essence, but to bring out the rhythmic lilts in the pieces, a feather-like touching is not about all there´s required. Rather, nuances and dynamics play the dominant part. It is precisely here that Martha Argerich´s Partita shines through.
The works in this album simply fail to bring out the essence of the music.
It is basically a stylistic problem than any thing else.. And summed up by saying A truly middle-of-the-road rendition that fails to grip the listener. Currently Bach: Partitas Nos. 2-4 has an overall rating of 8 over 10.
