Starring Oscar winners Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy, the movie co-stars Mary Louise Parker and Mary Stuart-Masterson, all performing in roles that were tailored made for the actresses. Bates stars as a woman who has reached middle age and is being taken for granted by her husband. While visiting a nursing home she befriends an elderly lady, played by Tandy, and the two become each other´s confidant. Parker and Masterson play women who eventually fall in love at a time when homosexuality wasn´t accepted or permitted. The movie was based on the novel, ´The Whistle Stop´, written by TV comedian and personality Fannie Flagg, best known for her stint on the ´70´s gameshow ´Match Game´. The movie was both a critical and commercial success, grossing nearly $120,000,000 at the boxoffice. The DVD comes with commentary, an excellent documentary on the film called ´Moments of Discovery´ featuring interviews with the cast, plus more.. And summed up by saying ´An A+ Film´.
