1) Tools & Hardware Home Improvement Jorgensen Woodworkers' Vise #41012 by Jorgensen. Nice Vice. Fast delivery. Did not come with installation instructions but I figured it out with out too much trouble.¤

2) Tools & Hardware Home Improvement Jorgensen Woodworkers' Vise #41012 by Jorgensen. The Jorgensen 10" woodworking vise is a solidly made tool. The castings are of generally good quality with smooth, unwarped surfaces and free of cracks and defects. I set it up fairly quickly and fashioned a set of maple jaws to cover the metal surfaces and protect my work. The rapid release mechanism works very well, and the action is very smooth and relatively free of slop.

A few minor gripes, well maybe not so minor. The provided template was off by at least 1/8" on the front screw placement. This is very annoying when you think you have it all set to mount, you hoist the VERY HEAVY vise up against your bench, and the screw holes don´t line up. I found it easier to remove the cotter pin, disassemble the vise, and use the actual yoke to establish the screw locations.

Also, all the bearing, machined surfaces on the vise, including the face plates, the rods and the main screw shaft, are covered with a thin, oily, anti-rust material which is black, and gets all over everything. I know this is probably necessary, but does it need to be BLACK?

All-in-all, a good product.¤

3) Tools & Hardware Home Improvement Jorgensen Woodworkers' Vise #41012 by Jorgensen. I purchased this vise when my trusty old Record finally died. Since I have quite a few tools made by Adjustable Clamp Co. (Jorgensen, Pony etc) which are great ,I figured this vise would be in the same league-WRONG!! Problems started from day 1. I was sure it was an optical illusion that the jaws seemed so misaligned and out of square and that a good installation would correct any percieved malady- WRONG AGAIN! The machining was so poor on this unit I had to shim both jaws to get this thing to clamp anything parallel. Acme screw was machined by a gorilla. The quick release is anything but unless you like fiddling around for the "sweet spot". Another wonderful feature of this baby is that caps on the handle love to fall off at the worst time. I finally got so irritated with them that I screwed them on and of course over time the cap split so I replaced it w/ a pipe.

I ´m sorry I waited so long to install this ´cause otherwise I would´ve returned it. Pretty much a boat anchor at this point. Boy do I miss my old Record.¤

4) Tools & Hardware Home Improvement Jorgensen Woodworkers' Vise #41012 by Jorgensen. A well engineered product released after they ´got the bugs´ out. Doesn´t sound very American. Jorgensen has a well known reputation and they seem to want to maintain it. The metal is clean, all parts align and the size and weight are a good mix for most applications.
I would only suggest two additional things. The handle´s end caps don´t fit well (sometimes). Do not force them on or they will split. Lightly taper the handle and either screw, glue or do both. ´J´ could send 3 to avoid user problems. Secondlyly, I would like to ´J´ supply a pair of hard wood inserts for the steel jaws. TJS¤

5) Tools & Hardware Home Improvement Jorgensen Woodworkers' Vise #41012 by Jorgensen. The metal portion of the vise would get five stars. It´s great, heavy duty, and works perfectly. Couldn´t ask for better, unless you like everything gold plated and polished. The wooden handle and caps are poor, and the caps WILL DEFINITELY SPLIT if you just push them on. Now how stupid is that? Anyway, you need to scrape the shaft down for clearance, then glue them on. And then there´s the packaging... or what was left of it. I think the factory sent the thing around the world by mule in the original box, which was nearly atomized. It looks like the retailer shipped the mess in another box, which was OK.

So, the iron is great, probably a design and manufacturing arrangement that has been around for a while. Everything else looks like it was done by clueless bean counters.¤

6) Tools & Hardware Home Improvement Jorgensen Woodworkers' Vise #41012 by Jorgensen. This heavy-duty woodworker´s vise from Jorgensen features a solid-steel dog in the front jaw which, when used in conjunction with a bench stop, allows oversized work to be held securely on the bench top. The machined toed-in jaw provides a solid grip, while northern hardwood handles provide balance and comfort. The front and back jaws have holes drilled in them to allow for optional wood facings (not included). This vise will easily fit any bench up to three-inches thick. Jaw size: 3-1/2 by 10 inches, with 12-inch maximum opening capacity. For a smaller version of the same vise, see Jorgensen´s model #40709A.--Josh Dettweiler
