Based onn Microsoft’s real time strategy game, Age of Mythology. The goal of the board game is to gain the most victory points. Victory points are awarded in three main ways: winning a combat, ending the game with the largest army, or building the game-ending wonder. Turns are played as a series of three actions in a round. Each player takes their first action before anyone starts their second. A player’s possible actions are controlled by cards. You choose your cards from a preset seven choices and can then draw a few extra from a random stack that contains the same options, but with bonuses. The random cards' main drawback lie in thier random nature, you never know what you're going to get. Draw too many random cards and you my not find cards with actions you need to perform. Cards allow players to attack, build, collect resources, trade with the bank, select another resource producing tile, recruit more armies, or advance to a new age. New ages increase your hand size and thus give you more options for your three actions during your turn. Read on...
Yahtzee is the world's most popular commercial dice game, first introduced in the 1950's and still a best-seller today. It is based on a game called "Yacht", and is also related to a Puerto Rican game called "Generala". To play the game you roll five dice in a effort to make different combinations of the five dice for the most points. Shoot for three-of-a-kind, four-of-a-kind, a full house, a straight, and more. If these "hands" sound familiar, it's because they're based on standard poker hands, with a few extra bonus hands thrown in. (Milton Bradley)
Who'd have thought a game about banking, real estate, taxes, utilities, and railroads would become one of board gaming's modern classics? It seems an unlikely success story to me, but Monopoly® beat the odds, and is now one of the world's best-known and best-loved board games. Elements of the game, such as the "Go To Jail. Go Directly to Jail; do not pass go, do not collect $200", "Get out of jail, free", and properties such as Boardwalk an Baltic Avenue have become touchstones of popular culture. (Hasbro)
Othello (also known as Reversi), is a board game for two players, played on a grid of 64 squares. The game begins with each player having two stones. The players alternate turns, each adding an additional stone to the board. A valid move must capture at least one of the opponent's stones. This is done by surrounding it, either vertically, horizontally, or diagonally (or a combination of all three). When this occurs, the opponent's stones that you have surround become yours. The turn then passes to your opponent, who tries to take as many of your stones as he can. Play continues until either one player loses all their stones, or until the entire board if filled. Whoever ends up owning the most stones at the end of the game wins.
Chess is a game for two players, played on a game board made up of 64 squares, alternately dark and light in color. Each player starts with sixteen chessmen, either white or black. Pieces are set down in a particular starting formation. Each different type of piece is moved according to specific rules and is removed from the board when it is captured by the opponent. The object is to "checkmate" the opponent's king.
You can't beat a classic like Boggle for sheer return of fun on one's investment in a simple game. A small container holds 16 cubes, each cube marked with a different letter on each of its six sides. Give the container a good shake, and the cubes land within little pockets. How many words can you find by linking adjacent letters? Try to find as many words of three or more letters as you can in 3 minutes. Form words by joining letters up, down, side-to-side and even diagonally. The longer and more unusual the words the higher your score. Families will learn this game in seconds, but enjoy playing for hours. Electronic Hand Held Boggle.
Scrabble® is a board game for two, three, or four players, played on a gameboard made up of 225 squares (15 x 15). 164 of the squares are normal, while the remainder have special attributes such as "double letter", "triple letter", "double word", and "triple word". Each player draws seven lettered tiles at random, and attempts to make a word on the board. The only real rules are that the word must use at least one previously-played letter, must form a word horizontally or vertically, and that the word must be a dictionary word (no people or place names). The resulting game ends up looking something like a crossword puzzle. Thus, Scrabble® is sometimes known as the "crossword" game.
Backgammon is one of the world's oldest board games, and is considered by many to be one of the best. It features elements that you may be familiar with from other games, such as the game pieces that resemble checkers or stones, and the dice which are used to randomly generate moves. The most distinctive visual element of the game is the game board itself -- rectangular in shape, with alternately-colored triangles forming the positions on which your gamepieces are placed. The game is a member of the general class of games known as "race games", in which the winner is the one who reaches a certain position on the board, or the one who first removes all their pieces from the board.
