Tata Nano is 1 lakh + 12,500 Rupees fo VAT + 8,000 Rupees for Road tax + 5000 Rupees for Insurance = 1.28 Lakh on the road. 1 Lakh = 100,000 Rupees = USD 2,500. Tata Nano nearest international rival would be China's Chery QQ which retails for 3,600 US dollars. How did Tata managed to build a car that can be sold at 1 Lakh? According to Tata, “virtually everything was developed ourselves, the car was a result of no radical changes, no reinvention of the manner in which a car is produced. A host of small and medium issues that has made it possible.” The key breakthrough is that Tata was able to package a car quite effectively using Frugal engineering concept. India has a culture of not wasting anything. For now, the car will be sold only in India, but Tata eventually hopes to export it. The Nano could become the basis for other similar super-cheap models in developing markets around the world.
